No matter how deep the wounds caused by the terrorist bombings in the last two weeks, the response must be cool-headed. Explosions at five locations in Surabaya killed 25 people -- 13 of them thought to be the perpetrators: three married couples and six of their children. In Pekanbaru, five people in a car attacked the Riau Police Headquarters, armed with swords, and drove their vehicle at officers on guard duty. The police shot four of the attackers dead after one officer was killed. Previously, terrorism inmates attacked officers inside the National Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) detention center in Depok, West Java. Five police investigators and one rioter died in the 36-hour episode.

According to National Police Chief Tito Karnavian, all three attacks were linked to the same Islamic State-affiliated group, Jamaah Ansharud Daulah. There is no debate over the fact that these terror attacks are extraordinary crimes that must be dealt with through extraordinary measures. The use of women and children from one family in suicide attacks is a new tactic that demands a resolute and cautious response from the authorities.
