IMF-World Bank annual meeting is kicking off in this week in Bali on October 8 to 14. The government must seize every opportunity at the event to boost the nation's economy and make the huge fund splurged on the event worthwhile. The Bali meeting will bring together 22 heads of states, 189 finance ministers, 189 central bank governors, international institutions and other stakeholders, the total number of delegation members reaching 32,000. As a host, the government has splashed out around Rp5.75 trillion consisting of Rp4.9 trillion for the construction and Rp855 billion as operational costs for the event.

Such a massive amount of money is certainly a burden to the state's coffers in this less than favorable economic condition. Besides, the country is in need of enormous fund following the natural disasters that ravaged several regions. It is, therefore, imperative to reap all possible benefits -- both directly or indirectly -- from this long-planned event. Direct benefits can come from the spike in international arrivals. The organizing committee predicted the non-tax revenues, including from the tourism sector, to reach around Rp. 44.4 billion.
