These are the consequences of the pragmatism from Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto in choosing their running mates. Vice-presidential candidate Ma'ruf Amin has to campaign extra hard to show he is more than simply an accessory to the incumbent president. The same is true for Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, who is running alongside Prabowo Subianto. In the not too distant future, both vice-presidential candidates will have to align themselves with the vision of their partners.

This political strategy has already caused problems. The former supreme leader of the Nahdlatul Ulama is known as a conservative Islamic figure, while Jokowi's vision is closer to moderate Islamic thought. There is a similar mismatch for the opposing pair. There are signs that Sandiaga was chosen based on campaign financing needs. The young entrepreneur could also address one of Prabowo's weaknesses in the 2014 election, namely his failure to garner a larger share of votes from women and young people. But he needs to align himself with Prabowo's vision, for example the plan for a people's economy.
