April 2016 - Forbes Indonesia

Welcome to our annual Inspiring Women issue. As Mao famously said, women hold up half the sky. The women profiled in these pages are most definitely capable of that, ranging in accomplishments across a variety of fields. As always we tried to find a representative sample of women who have reached the highest levels of their chosen path. It could be philanthropy, in the case of Mieno Uno, or it could be in telecom, as for Dian Siswarini. Mia Susanto chose to champion breastfeeding. This choice is particularly striking. It may seem like a mundane topic, breastfeeding, and maybe not even an impressive subject to tackle. Yet the ramifications of encouraging more breastfeeding are truly fundamental. Many children die of malnutrition in Indonesia, caused in part by a lack of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in the crucial early months of life can have multiple benefits, such as improved long-term health, psychological benefits and perhaps even better intelligence. The lack of same can result in opposite effects. Thus, what may seem like a simple, even unimportant, choice: breast milk or formula, has significant consequences for the growth and development of a new human being. To be sure, modern baby formula does have plenty of benefits, and has its proper place in child nutrition.
