Donald Trump's victory in the recent US presidential election last week showed that irrationality, indifference and a kind of insanity have taken root in many places. Before the Trump phenomenon in the US, narrow nationalism, anti-immigrant and anti-Islam tendencies had been slowly spreading in Europe. Even Asia has seen the appearance of politicians such as Rodrigo Duterte, who has pioneered a kind of cowboy politics that is clearly at odds with human rights, spreading irrational fear of anything 'foreign'. This phenomenon is creating considerable uneasiness--if not outright worry. Trump's campaign which eventually led to his victory, awakened the worst of human instincts. It was filled with fanaticism, evil and hatred. His election as president of a nation universally regarded as the champion of democracy, is nothing less than an affront to common sense. Admittedly, democracy is not a perfect system, especially when the majority of the people can easily be manipulated.
