It was Golkar chairman Aburizal Bakrie who proposed the tax amnesty initiative for the first time when he was running as Golkar?s candidate for president. In a special interview, Aburizal stated that with a tax amnesty Indonesia could bring back money stashed abroad, which he estimated to be billions of dollars. The tax amnesty issue is proving to be the hottest issue nowadays with the Joko Widodo administration pushing for the initiative to become law. That would bring back a lot of funds which in turn could be used for more productive programs such as infrastructure development. Now with Golkar joining the ruling coalition, and with Setya Novanto at the helm, he could return a favor by herding Golkar legislators to pass the tax amnesty legislation right away.
