Setya Novanto is a fine example of the irony of democracy. The Golkar party chairman climbed the political ladder to the top through constitutional procedures including general and party elections. Albeit dogged by myriad scandals, he managed to hold on to his public position. Setya's first controversy after being elected as DPR's speaker came when he met with Donald Trump, who was then campaigning for the US presidential election, in September 2015. However, his political support may be waning this time. Setya with his dodging skills now faces the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Last Monday, KPK named him a suspect in the mega corruption case involving the electronic ID card project. He is suspected to have conspired with other people, among others, businessman Andi Agustinus, another suspect in the case, to embezzle funds. Following the trial of two former home affairs ministry officials, Irman and Sugiharto, the judge confirmed corruption was collectively carried out in the Rp 5.9 trillion project. Setya is yet to resign.
