As the saying goes, the best way to know the future is to create it. A fitting example of this ideal can be found in the cover subject, Wendy Yap of PT Nippon Indosari Corpindo, better known as Sari Roti, the brand name of its popular bread products. She started her company back in 1995, growing it into the country's dominant mass-market bread company. She had a clear vision, implemented on it, and created her -- and her company's -- future. Now she is embarked on the largest-ever expansion of her business since its founding. Her story aptly supports the theme of "creating the future" that will be used for this year's annual" Inspiring Women" conference.

The same theme could also be applied to describe the women in the "Inspiring Women" package. It is meant to encompass empowerment, self-confidence and, of course, creativity. These women are on the forefront of creating the future, for themselves and for society. The underlying message is that women can and must create their own futures. They are learning to take greater control of their lives, their businesses and their careers. They can now seize more opportunities, craft their own professional lives, start and build their own companies, or operate a useful social enterprise. While the expectations on women have never been greater, so are the opportunities to enrich and advance themselves.

The overall agenda is clear: the name of this list is "Inspiring Women". The list is meant to inspire others, presumably women but there's plenty of reasons why that men can also find some inspiration as well among these names. All the women on this list were chosen because of their accomplishments, not because of their wishful thinking, they persevered and succeeded in their chosen fields. The month for this issue is also meant to coincide with Kartini day, a woman who was inspiring as well, in her life's work in human rights and social justice. So the hope is that we can all find some inspiration in these pages, and help create a new -- and better -- reality.
