Who would have thought the symposium last April, which openly discussed the tragic events of 1965, would awaken a sleeping giant? Four government institutions?the military, the police, the Attorney-General?s Office and state intelligence?unleashed long-repressed fears of a communist revival and launched a series of activities to fight the phantom Indonesian Communist Party, or PKI. Their actions triggered the zeal of hardline Islamic groups and retired military men who are now planning a counter-symposium of their own.
