It is quite reasonable for some political parties to focus on winning their legislative candidates instead of campaigning all-out for their nominated presidential candidates. After all, a presidential candidate's win does not translate into surge in support for them. Some surveys even ascertain that only the candidate's own party -- not the supporting ones -- will reap electoral benefits. In fact, Widodo-Ma'ruf coalition parties' lack of enthusiasm on the campaign trail was already visible from the beginning. The cadres from nominating parties cannot be expected to fight independently only with perfunctory surplus resources from the national campaign team to turn the wheels of the party machines in the regions.

The same chaotic inter-party collaboration goes down among the parties that nominated Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno ticket. Allegations and counter-allegations between Democrat and Gerindra in the past week is a manifestation of fierce competition between the two parties. Gerindra alleged that Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono was not optimally campaigning for the pair.
