The Lion Air tragedy has stirred up emotions among the people: sorrow mixed with anger and concern. There is sorrow for the fate of the 189 passengers and crew of flight JT 610 that crashed in the waters off Tanjung Pakis, Karawang, last Monday. Although parts of the aircraft and the flight recorder have been recovered, the bodies of some passengers have yet to be found. Anger appeared after the realization that perhaps the tragedy could have been avoided if Lion Air had not irresponsibly allowed the troublesome aircraft to fly.

There were indications of problems with control system of the airplane flying the Jakarta to Pangkalpinang route from when it took off at 6:20am local time. On the recording of the conversation with the control tower, the pilot can be heard asking for permission to return to Jakarta. This permission was given, and a landing pattern provided, but the aircraft never returned. Only 13 minutes after takeoff, flight JT 610 crashed into the sea. The recording of the conversation between the pilot and airport officials reveals that the flight parameters, such as height and speed, were not being displayed in the cockpit, so the pilot was effectively flying blind.
