June 2017 - Forbes Indonesia

This month's issue is all about champions. On the cover, Agus Rahardjo is a champion as the chairman of the KPK, helping raise the agency's profile with some high-profile cases. Adding to the theme, the special feature of the issue is called Local Champions. What is a local champion? While Indonesia has export-focused firms and national giants, much of the economy is local, made up of small and midsized firms. This month has a new feature highlighting some of these local champions. These companies are ones that are entirely homegrown, starting from humble roots and often outside the mainstream urban areas, and succeeded in becoming relatively well-known within their respective industries, in areas such as coffee (Coffindo), bicycles (Wimcycle) or fishery (Dua Putra).

The KPK, too, is a unique product of Indonesia. Established in 2003, it has grown into a major eradicator of corruption. While best known for its prosecutions of the high and mighty, the KPK has taken its mission further than that. The existence of KPK, and its active persecution of corruption, is a healthy and positive sign for the country. It fosters hope in a population fed up with endemic corruption, as well as boosting the international image of the country in the global community, and, importantly, international investors. The process, indeed, can be long and painful. The KPK has many enemies, especially from those who enrich themselves with ill-gotten gains.

Yet there are historic parallels. Next door, Singapore was once one of the world's most corrupt places. The determined leadership of the late Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) allowed the island-state to become of one of the world's most successful and also one of the cleaniest, if not the cleaniest, countries in the world. Yet the process of rooting out corruption even in this small nation was a difficult task, as described in detail in LKY's books and other material -- yet the point is, it can be done. With help from the KPK, Indonesia can and should also get it done.
