Amir Hamzah was executed by socialist youths in the tumult following the Dutch colonial government's eviction from the Langkat Sultanate, East Sumatra, on March 20, 1946. Amir, a Pujangga Baru (New Literati) poet, had always been active in organizations fighting for the Indonesian archipelago's independence from the Dutch. Amir took part in most of the independence movements prior to Indonesia's proclamation of freedom in 1945. In his speeches and magazine articles, Amir recommended adopting Malay as a unifying language in order to foster nationalism. He taught in remote villages to promote the importance of national independence. In short, Amir was a true republican. But his efforts were overshadowed by his lineage. Because he was the Sultan of Langkat's nephew and son-in-law, Amir was killed by socialist youths and militia members impatient to drive out the Dutch. Was he really a Dutch collaborator? Tempo Magazine presents this special edition on Amir Hamzah to bring to light the complex affairs surrounding Indonesia's independence.
