January - March 2017 : Forbes Life

Formula One has always been the holy grail of automotive racing, the creme de la creme of racing, with the best technology and drivers. Sean Ricardo Gelael, 19, is one driver from Indonesia who is still chasing the dream to the reach that level, starting from when he first raced at the mere age of nine. Sean last year competed in a full season for the first time in the GP2 series with Pertamina Campos Racing. GP2 currently is the last stepping stone before a driver is recruited to race in Formula One (F1), the same route taken by world champions such as Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Indonesia?s first F1 driver Rio Haryanto was also recruited to F1 after he finished fourth in the GP2 Series. "I want to be in F1 in two or three years time, I want to be in F1 and that is my goal and dream," Sean says. However the road to F1 is not a simple task, as the pinnacle of racing costs a fortune to join. Indonesia?s first F1 driver Rio Haryanto only lasted half a season because of financial problems. Rio at that time reportedly only was able to secure half of the $16 million needed to run full season.
