All eyes are on the South Jakarta District Court which will hear Setya Novanto's pre-trial motion this week, as the electronic ID card (e-KTP) graft suspect tries to exploit loopholes in our judicial process. The supreme court and the judicial commission responsible for judges' conduct must keep a close watch on the hearing. This week's hearing, after the first session last week, is extremely crucial as the fate of the House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker will be determined by the sole judge, Cepi Iskandar. He is the only judge who will review the process of the case, including the raid and seizure carried out by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). But the crux of Setya's motion is his status as a suspect. Setya, who has not complied with the KPK's summons for health reasons, still holds significant political power. He has not resigned from his positions as DPR Speaker and Golkar party chief despite the suspect status he earned last July. Setya's camp with its wide network also has the potential to engage in manipulation of the judiciary.
