The decision by the panel of Corruption Court judges to indict Setya Novanto signaled the beginning of the end of the political power of the now former Golkar Party chairman. The elite of this party quickly stripped him of his powers, holding an extraordinary national consultative meeting of the party at the beginning of the week to do so. The day after the court's first sitting for the corruption case involving the production of electronic-based identity (e-KTP) cards, the South Jakarta District Court judge rejected Setya's submissions for the pre-trial hearing. His grounds were that Setya was no longer a suspect in the case but is now the accused. At an earlier pre-trial hearing, held after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had named him a suspect in the same case, the judge hearing his claim held that the action was not legitimate. The decision of the KPK to again name Setya a suspect is truly worthy of a thumb's up. Under the intense political pressure the Commission faced, its move has effectively put a stop to efforts by the senior politician to avoid going to trial.
