March 2018 - Forbes Indonesia

This month's special section is themed the "financial revolution." The word "revolution" is often misused, few situations can truly justify being called a revolution. Yet what's happening now in financial services would definitely qualify -- the entire global financial system is being upended by a range of innovations that promise to reshape it. Here are some of the leading technological disrupters: e-money, fintech, cryptocurrencies and blockchain.

The cover story amply demonstrates this: a small group of cryptocurrency enthusiasts have embraced these digital currencies in a way to create fortunes for themselves -- in real-world money -- that vault them into the elite ranks of the wealthiest people on earth. The revolution continues in other areas: while the Indonesian government has cautioned against the use of cryptocurrencies, it has promoted the use of e-money, taking steps toward a cashless society. At the same time, fintech startups are challenging the traditional incumbents in banking, finance and insurance. Even in the mundane world of tax collection, startup OnlinePajak is now working with the national tax agency to help it gather taxes -- and has blue-chip clients such as Astra International and Garuda Indonesia.

Another exciting development is blockchain, the technology that powers cryptocurrencies. The blockchain technology can have a wider significance than just for cryptocurrencies, and a startup based in Ubud is already helping local companies figure out how to use it. Big data firm Dattabot is working on a project to track agricultural products using a blockchain.
