In this Internet age, winning over opinions on social media has become serious business. This is the reality that we have to face: achievements are measured by how many 'likes' a posting receives, or how many times it is 'shared'. The hashtag has become a worrying mantra: the wider a message spreads, the more it is perceived as being true. In the run up to the elections, hashtags have become a big thing. Opponents of President Joko Widodo have been using #2019GantiPresiden (#2019ReplaceThePresident) -- a campaign to stop Jokowi being re-elected next year. This campaign has spread on the Internet and has unnerved the President.
According to social media surveyor and analyst Drone Emprit, there have been 37,000 responses from Twitter followers of the movement. Jokowi's supporters have countered by producing #DiaSibukKerja (#He?sBusyWorking), #2019TetapPresiden (#2019StayPresident), and then #2019NantiPresiden (#2019HeWillBePresident). Jokowi himself seems to view the hashtag issue as important, and worth responding to. Addressing supporters in Bogor, West Java, he said that he could only be replaced by the people, not by T-shirts with #2019GantiPresiden written on them.
