The suspected corruption surrounding Newmont Nusa Tenggara's divestment has revealed more of the dark side in the allocation of mining shares for the regions. Regional shares, meant to improve the people's welfare, are instead being traded without transparency. Regional government officials are suspected of enjoying the fruits of these sales, while local communities are left only with disappointment.
The KPK is now tracing the flow of funds received by West Nusa Tenggara Governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi, known as Tuan Guru Bajang, during the Newmont divestment period. The anticorruption team's data shows that as much as Rp7.36 billion went into his personal account in 2009-2011. Additionally, billions of rupiah went into an account owned by the governor's wife in the same period. The suspicious flow of funds is suspected of having to do with the purchase of Newmont shares by the regional government, paid in stages with dividend.
