The distribution of drugs involving elementary school students in Makassar, South Sulawesi, set off new alarm bells. This case shows how drugs networks have spread to school students. As well as abusing drugs, these kids now are involved in selling them. The police need to identify everybody involved in this worrying case. The aim is not to punish the children involved, but to arrest the dealers. This will be easier because the child who was selling the drugs turned himself in to police after a month on the run. He had been supplying drugs to a junior high school student for subsequent resale. It is this junior high school student who was arrested last week.
The Makassar case is further evidence that students are a soft target for drug dealers. A 2017 survey by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) showed that school students make up 24 percent of drug users. The largest group is full-time employees, who make up 59 percent of drug users of all ages. The BNN survey showed that the prevalence of drug use nationwide is on the decline, from 4.7 percent in 2012 to 2.9 percent last year.
